2010 Annual Meeting Info

The 2010 Meeting, held on January 30 at the Smith Middle School in Glastonbury CT, was highlighted by the presence of professors Ronald G. Beckett and Gerald Conlogue, co-directors of the Bioanthropology Research Institute of Quinnipiac University. Their presentation, "Mummy Dearest: Interpreting the Past Through Paleoimaging," featured case studies illustrating how the use of technologies such as Imaging CR, CT, MRI and videoendoscopy are enabling archaeologists, anthropologists and scienists to interpret human remains and artifacts. They also touched on the difficulties of doing their imaging work in situ, in areas where things such as electricity and running water are often not avaiable. Different techniques of mummification were discussed, as well as how our changing perception of the care for the mummified remains, and the need to treat them with respect, have evolved over the years.

Preceding this was the "business" portion of the meeting. Highlights included the following:

> It was noted that this year FOSA and the ASC had entered a closer a closer association with each other, working collaboratively together in order to increase the public's awareness of Connecticut's archaeological past, in addition to our common aim of supporting the Office of State Archaeology.

> During 2010 FOSA sponsored presentations on the submarine "Turtle" replica and on Connecticut Geology. In addition, there were 2 Saturday Catalog Training sessions, as well as the normal Monday cataloging sessions, in Building 5 on Horsebarn Hill at UConn.

> A Certificate of Achievement award was presented to Bruce Greene, a founding member of FOSA who has spent many years in support of our archaeological work; and who has recently spent a great deal of his time cataloging and entering into our artifact database information on the many thousands of artifacts that we've helped collect over the years. Bruce has currently been actiing as Field Director for our on-site activities. A facsimilies of Bruce's certificate can be viewed .
