Found Something Unusual? Ask An Archaeologist!

Have you found something unusual that you wonder might have historical/archaeological significance? As noted in the Fall 2023 FOSA newsletter article, sometimes archaeological sites have been found by people asking questions about things that look unusual to them.

Here's info on the best ways to ask about unusual findings in Connecticut:

1. Send an email to fosa.ct@gmail.com using the subject line "Found Something Unusual" so it can be directed to the State Archaeologist or another expert.

OR...

2. Send the information via postal mail to FOSA:

Friends of the Office of State Archaeology, Inc.

P.O. Box 380845

East Hartford, CT 06138-0845

add ATTN: Found Something to a lower corner of the envelope so it can be shared with the appropriate person.

These are some things you may want to include in your email/mail to help describe what you've found:

  • • The location where you found it. GPS coordinates are great, but you could also send pinned location in a mapping app, or the location marked on a map. Provide details so someone else can find the location. Don't forget to include the town!
  • • 1 or more pictures of the object. A picture can be worth 1,000 words for identifying the object. If you can, include a photo of the area surrounding the object to help with finding the location.
  • • Information about the object: size, material, depth from surface (if buried), etc. Anything you think would help in identifying it.
